In his early teens, he was captured by raiders and crammed aboard a Portuguese ship bound for the New World. But the ship never made it. A British warship attacked the Portuguese ship in an attempt to stop the slave traders. Ajayi was one of only 87 of the 189 enslaved passengers who survived the attack. He was then sent to Sierra Leone. After learning English and beginning to study the Scriptures, Ajayi became a Christian and took the name “Samuel” at his baptism in 1825.</div><div><br /></div><div>As a college student, Crowther studied Greek and Latin in addition to West African languages. In 1843, Crowther began compiling a dictionary in his own language -- Yoruba -- and began translating the Bible for his people. While the full Yoruba Bible would not be completed until 1884, Crowther aided other West African translation projects. Local and foreign leaders saw Crowther’s work as a groundbreaking approach to indigenous-led Bible translation that helped affirm the power of local communities. In the last 50 years, churches and organizations worldwide have rediscovered the importance of that approach to Bible translation. Dr Crowther's legacy continues today.</div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhySwPCm49h4UKlj2KssZ8PW8KVDu6ZTayswXCS7FgwChE815xVlwTfbZU3nu6Mb9QW8pN_ie093AbZztxoK_yxSrdc8Pyyc6zdAFKREepD5DNy819a2eQmBHeXY6XKajVhuuNfGJwEgGpNfao6D1LpkMLF4tM6ydGvtH64Dg6XLqMMpocEytQLZsZvW8WI/s760/2024-02-23-Samuel-Ajayi-Crowther.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="500" data-original-width="760" height="211" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhySwPCm49h4UKlj2KssZ8PW8KVDu6ZTayswXCS7FgwChE815xVlwTfbZU3nu6Mb9QW8pN_ie093AbZztxoK_yxSrdc8Pyyc6zdAFKREepD5DNy819a2eQmBHeXY6XKajVhuuNfGJwEgGpNfao6D1LpkMLF4tM6ydGvtH64Dg6XLqMMpocEytQLZsZvW8WI/s320/2024-02-23-Samuel-Ajayi-Crowther.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div><div style="text-align: center;"><i style="font-size: small;">Samuel Ajayi Crowther (c. 1809-1891)</i></div><span style="font-size: x-small;"><div style="text-align: center;"><i>Story and Image: <a href="https://seedcompany.com/stories/honoring-the-legacy-of-samuel-ajayi-crowther/" target="_blank">seedcompany.com/stories/honoring-the-legacy-of-samuel-ajayi-crowther/</a></i></div></span><br />Recent Highlights -- Answers to Prayer:<br />- The January/February work project is complete! Here's what that will look like: A team of 3-5 Facilitators will lead six 2-week workshops evenly spread over 2-3 years. The 4-5 participants per language (often 5-6 language groups are part of each project) are chosen by their church or their community. The participants learn to tell 30-50 stories of the Bible in their own language over the length of the project.<div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://groups.google.com/g/lisas-lines/c/cN3HtplXW6Q" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" target="_blank"><img border="0" data-original-height="629" data-original-width="496" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi-gZHcw-KOmg4C8Th8Iz1L13T306hDyHnD4sg_aMAZ7-oDmHbDxpM2wU9mDKZysAzlCs4Zec5VzLPKWZTZxGmkfte__RAhHl6xuLLAb95oRNWt5EAGF_k5AVm_uzhjmQqX00UBo9pac013Vt-zSlYEvlCaaqQNs-USkWFDl38KCcHz20DP0HMCxg80YTqF/s320/2024-01-19-image.jpg" width="252" /></a></div>The whole group decides together with the facilitators which Bible stories to learn, generally starting with stories from Mark’s Gospel. Story selection varies from themes, books of the Bible, the lives of Biblical characters. The stories and storytelling are checked by translation consultants and checkers. There is a strong emphasis on using the local storytelling style in the crafting and performance of the stories. There often is immediate impact between workshops as the storytellers tell the stories in their communities (village, family, church). The stories create a hunger for more of God’s Word in the local language and are excellent preparation for more Bible translation.<div><br /></div><div><i><span style="font-size: x-small;">Story Source: <a href="https://emdc.guide/resources/oral-bible-storytelling/" target="_blank">emdc.guide/resources/oral-bible-storytelling/</a></span></i><br /><span style="font-size: x-small;"><i><br /></i></span></div><div><span style="font-size: x-small;"><i>Read the <a href="https://groups.google.com/g/lisas-lines/c/cN3HtplXW6Q" target="_blank">Jan 9, 2015 update about the Nkukoli</a>.</i></span><br /><br /><br />Thanks so much for your prayers for the January/February work project. Forty years ago, Naskapi leaders asked SIL (one of Wycliffe’s strategic partners) to help start a foundational grammar and dictionary project for the Naskapi language (which uses syllabics - characters that each represent an entire syllable). <br /><br />SIL’s Bill Jancewicz has been serving as resource linguist since he and his wife Norma Jean joined the community-based Naskapi language and culture development strategy in 1988. The project has yielded a Naskapi dictionary, mother-tongue literacy and education, printed Naskapi stories and legends, and translation efforts, including Scripture.<br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgx5lgBb-1zoJd4JPnzb_fq2hJu-66XZyPn8U_hcLh50KwHNTWgTNFeIVS7WfNbNmUJeqGcG28iEXPNTI8t537ceKmc79hzj3wNjQh3RnZX75I3rknTQEo0wE36bISMn-KkEdaHcH0gzHrEoQwIEjiLsAOaUYuKHuzBZFxwXnEF4gYe1vOytDPaZsuU9-rR/s538/Picture1.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="360" data-original-width="538" height="268" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgx5lgBb-1zoJd4JPnzb_fq2hJu-66XZyPn8U_hcLh50KwHNTWgTNFeIVS7WfNbNmUJeqGcG28iEXPNTI8t537ceKmc79hzj3wNjQh3RnZX75I3rknTQEo0wE36bISMn-KkEdaHcH0gzHrEoQwIEjiLsAOaUYuKHuzBZFxwXnEF4gYe1vOytDPaZsuU9-rR/w400-h268/Picture1.png" width="400" /></a></div><br />Imagine how different life would be without access to the Bible in a language we clearly understand... It's such a joy to say, "Yes!" when God positions us to meet a need -- to help someone. It's Wycliffe's goal to say, "Yes!" when churches and communities around the world seek assistance with Bible translation. Through your prayers and gifts for my Wycliffe ministry, you've been saying, "Yes!" We're participating together as God's Word is made accessible to all people in the more than 7,000 languages that are spoken or signed in our world today. Take a look at the video below to see what God is doing!<br /><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><iframe allowfullscreen="" class="BLOG_video_class" height="266" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/q4ebooPd8-U" width="320" youtube-src-id="q4ebooPd8-U"></iframe></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: x-small;"><i>Story Source: <a href="https://youtu.be/q4ebooPd8-U?si=bgS3b-cCNDiLLqo9" target="_blank">youtu.be/q4ebooPd8-U?si=bgS3b-cCNDiLLqo9</a> (2:35)</i></span></div><br />Highlights this month:<br />- The October software update went very smoothly!<br />- The audio/visual things at the Women's Retreat were fine.<br />- The Women's Retreat provided time for making new connections and deepening existing ones.<br />- I've had some improvements in sleep.<br />- There have been opportunities to spend time with family.<br /><br />Items for prayer:<br />- Continued wisdom with clients. Every situation is different.<br />- I'll have a sleep study done again in a few weeks to measure improvement.<br />- We're still figuring out what family gatherings look like.<br />- I'm heading to Florida in November, Lord willing, for some work in the office, reconnecting with colleagues, and vacation.<br /><br />Please let me know how to pray with you, too. One of Wycliffe's strategic partners, <a href="https://www.jaars.org/" target="_blank">JAARS</a>, has a center in North Carolina where missionaries can go to learn how to be successful as drivers in what we would consider "off-road" conditions, but that might be very normal where they live and serve.<div><br /></div><div>In this video, <a href="https://wycliffe.org/partner/4D31C4" target="_blank">Casey & Valerie Ellis</a>, share about the vehicle training they received. They also talk about how God is using his Word to change the lives of people in Vanuatu. Your partnership through your prayers and gifts for my Wycliffe ministry is a part of the bigger picture, helping others not only have a translated Bible, but also helping them learn how to make it a part of their lives and how to share it with others.</div><div><br /></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://youtu.be/BVgMUusCeEE?si=XN6RxScKNIulIIJy" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" target="_blank"><img border="0" data-original-height="404" data-original-width="768" height="168" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj9rZDnY3EY2a4PMcseGDVyrMe9cYSRzbQqgl567zXflAH5VZw3goUBl2S2zIdWq3IO3bX5sZf93ZrfUL4qdZ0MggTANcgxxcKRLRqxxduF0z2htXzBc7r4wTcev1yLCs04NZvTMPy6h46b5WVnbOYiTy-oJSo5mvsDILemM3LNNU-XcPztftyLl1_OU_2D/s320/2023-09-29-small.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><i><span style="font-size: x-small;">Story Source: <a href="https://youtu.be/BVgMUusCeEE?si=kHMco90dWzfZyjmK" target="_blank">youtu.be/BVgMUusCeEE?si=kHMco90dWzfZyjmK</a> (3:13)</span></i></div><br />Highlights this month:<br />- My Wycliffe workload is at a good level.<br />- The Lord is providing much wisdom for some unique situations with new clients.<br />- I got to work with a group doing software testing for an update coming in October. I'll be involved in final testing on Monday.<br />- We're beginning to figure out what "family" gatherings look like in this chapter of life. Everyone's coming to my place tomorrow for some birthday celebrations.<br />- I have begun using a sleep apnea device. Pray for good adjustment to it and for improved sleep.<br />- I'm helping with audio/visual needs at Faith's Women's Retreat, Oct 6-8.<br /></div><br />Thank you for your prayers. In the wake of that tragedy, the surviving translation team members felt a deep sense of urgency to help other nearby language communities have the hope of Christ. Today 11 communities in the area, including Arop, are involved in Bible translation.<div><br /></div><div>Clement, a Bible translator for one of the communities, heard music as he walked home from church one Sunday morning. He noticed a crowd gathering outside a church and saw the people listening to lyrics that had been written during a recent songwriting workshop. “I feel so glad that these translated Scriptures in song are being listened to and are sparking more interest in the translated Word of God,” he said. “Now I’m hearing people humming the Scripture songs, and I’m encouraged to keep translating.”</div><div><br /></div><div>Through your prayer and gifts for my Wycliffe ministry, you help others have the hope of Christ. I'll email more details as they become available about this GO (Global Outreach) Time weekend.<div><br /></div><div>Please pray as I prepare, that the Lord would lead me to the right stories and illustrations so the Spirit might move some to whatever next steps He has planned for them. We'll focus lots on those kinds of roles that have always been a best fit for me -- those roles in the background. Ok, no more hints now. You'll need to come and join us in person or online. :-)</div><div><div style="text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://faithchurchindy.com/outreach/missions/go-time-weekends/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" target="_blank"><img border="0" data-original-height="768" data-original-width="768" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhHdbg3xAoZfdBUVsxluns2Ggm1FHABbDYAjz7gkEWevgJfW6RNt_NtDH9Ko3F3qT87PbzEQLHrMyyM98b7ssf3k5q1saJDkZd2MEBs-h38LueHOQ4EDiksN7uAiLjlKflAfe3bb7sMPThqHWp20zWOYT5B2tQeAhMt8PkFmGXXdF9-GHj1dam0H2GkdQ/s320/GO_time-small.jpg" width="320" /></a></div></div><span style="font-size: x-small;"><div style="text-align: center;">More details to come here and at: <a href="https://faithchurchindy.com/outreach/missions/go-time-weekends/" target="_blank">faithchurchindy.com/outreach/missions/go-time-weekends/</a></div></span><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div>Thank you for your faithful prayers as I've been settling in, developing new life and work routines, and continuing with the remaining details of Mom's estate. The Bible Translator’s Assistant is a cutting-edge software to help bridge that gap. Developed by Wycliffe Bible Translators Canada in collaboration with partners like Wycliffe USA, The Bible Translator’s Assistant (TBTA) is speeding up Bible translation!<div><br /></div><div>The Bible Translator’s Assistant (TBTA) is able to combine grammar analysis of a language with templates of books of the Bible and create an initial translated draft. The software can be used with any language that has been analyzed to work with the program. Local translators then polish the draft through a variety of team and community checks.</div><div><br /></div><div>Language communities who have used TBTA report that it reduces the overall time and cost of translating a Scripture up to 40%. This means an Old Testament could be translated in only half the time or an entire Bible translation could be completed in 12-13 years rather than the average of 20 years! Praise God that he continues to bring his Word to the peoples of the world so their lives might be transformed. This is what we are a part of in the "big picture" of Bible translation. That is a thrill to me!</div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhjNRiOZFPnZ1tAEQ37Ahdq14fUl_sNEUrcCpBSjoshn-Tkr6FPOdi01HMxMR5tjdijt_FsAkkACu64YwCsoTsz_ceMfXauWDRl7pmh1R0SO2tE_ifqFiNTFAWQEk9xxchg3eHSYSlJmddZxKnyXLLuRcvHm8X-QodD0Zo6y-BZkzwRvzsqKSZow-MmHw/s800/translators-working-laptops_800.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="533" data-original-width="800" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhjNRiOZFPnZ1tAEQ37Ahdq14fUl_sNEUrcCpBSjoshn-Tkr6FPOdi01HMxMR5tjdijt_FsAkkACu64YwCsoTsz_ceMfXauWDRl7pmh1R0SO2tE_ifqFiNTFAWQEk9xxchg3eHSYSlJmddZxKnyXLLuRcvHm8X-QodD0Zo6y-BZkzwRvzsqKSZow-MmHw/w400-h266/translators-working-laptops_800.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><i><span style="font-size: xx-small;">Translators at Work, Story and Photo: <a href="https://www.wycliffe.org/blog/posts/innovation-for-minority-languages-the-bible-translators-assistant" target="_blank">wycliffe.org/blog/posts/innovation-for-minority-languages-the-bible-translators-assistant</a></span></i></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div>Thank you for your continued faithful prayers and gifts for my Wycliffe ministry. God has been answering your prayers as I have been learning some complicated tasks for my member finance role. It will take some time to execute the routine smoothly for these tasks that will come up each month, but I am trusting that the Lord will help me become better at it with practice.<div><br /></div><div>God has also answered your prayers about housing for me. But Bible translation today looks very different than it has in the past. Today, local believers and churches are not only asking for God’s Word, they are taking ownership of the work, too. As the global Church has increased vision of and ownership in the work of Bible translation, there has been an unprecedented level of growth and impact.<div><br /></div><div>Through Global Partnerships (a multi-organizational collaboration), Wycliffe Bible Translators engaged with almost 500 new languages in 2022. This was a significant increase from the 150 new languages engaged in 2020.</div><div><br /></div><div>This exponential growth is bigger than any of us. Bible translation cannot be done without God’s hand at work in the lives of people joining together through prayer, giving, personnel resourcing and local ownership. Through your prayers and gifts for my Wycliffe ministry, you are a part of what God is doing around the world! Thank you!</div><div><br /></div><div><i><span style="font-size: x-small;">Story Source: <a href="http://wycliffe.org/blog/posts/god-on-the-move-accelerated-impact-through-bible-translation-today" target="_blank">wycliffe.org/blog/posts/god-on-the-move-accelerated-impact-through-bible-translation-today </a></span></i><br /><br /><span style="font-size: medium;">Personal Update </span><br /><br />I am so grateful for the many faithful prayers and encouragements the Lord provided before and after <a href="https://www.matthewsmortuary.com/obituary/phyllis-meharry" target="_blank">Mom’s passing (Dec 22)</a>. Think of it -- this year, there are communities hearing and reading and seeing the story of Jesus' birth for the first time in a language they best understand, all because of Bible translation. Your prayers and gifts for my Wycliffe ministry have been a huge part of bringing the Good News of great joy to all people. Thank you!<div><br /></div><div>Dr. John Chesnut serves as President and Chief Executive Officer of Wycliffe Bible Translators USA. Wycliffe Bible Translators partners with many other organizations, working together in Scripture translation. A representative from one of those partner organizations, the Deaf Bible Society, joined us in a prayer meeting recently. I learned much from this video in which she's the "hearing" person.<div><br /><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><iframe allowfullscreen="" class="BLOG_video_class" height="266" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/GsQRLazuovw" width="320" youtube-src-id="GsQRLazuovw"></iframe></div><div><br /></div>October is the start of the new fiscal year for Wycliffe, which means all the new missionaries I am working with need revisions to their ministry budgets, to align them with new costs. Since they are in the time of initially asking God to provide through the generosity of individuals and churches, it's important that they have an accurate budget in mind. It's been fun to work through a new app on our HR site to get those budgets completed. I've had opportunity to touch base with each new coworker assigned to me and see how we might help them. In the other part of my role, we continue to celebrate colleagues as they reach their anniversaries with Wycliffe. I'm encouraged as we recognize the faithful legacy of so many.</div><div><br /></div><div>Thank you for your many notes and prayers for Mom and me as we do life together. We seem to be in a time of one step forward; two steps back. Each day is the same and yet can be very different. We're grateful God has written all our days in his book before they ever came to be. We rest in that truth.</div></div>Lisahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04785225357899036438noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6907631272228886089.post-55427868243041904522022-09-09T05:45:00.002-04:002022-09-09T05:47:26.592-04:00Translating Across ContinentsThe Kunama Bible translation process is unique because the community is displaced from their home country of Eritrea and are dispersed around the world. The Kunama New Testament team works from North America while the Old Testament team works from Ethiopia. The translators have overcome significant obstacles and challenges, but they serve faithfully and humbly to bring Scripture to the Kunama diaspora. One translator's motivation:<div><br /></div><blockquote style="border: none; margin: 0px 0px 0px 40px; padding: 0px;"><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: large;"><i>When you read it, if you don't understand well, you don't go back next time. But when they have the Book that's easy to read, it's written in the dialect they use every day... they will go deep into God's Word.</i></span></div></blockquote><div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">(For those of you from Faith Church, <a href="https://www.wycliffe.org/partner/Shrums">Jeff Shrum</a> makes appearances at 3:54 and 4:39.)<br /><div style="text-align: center;"><iframe allowfullscreen="" class="BLOG_video_class" height="266" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/myIX4zGsl6s" width="320" youtube-src-id="myIX4zGsl6s"></iframe></div></div><div style="text-align: center;"><i><span style="font-size: x-small;"><a href="http://youtu.be/myIX4zGsl6s" target="_blank">youtu.be/myIX4zGsl6s</a> (7:01)</span></i></div> <br />Thank you for your prayers for my trip to Orlando. God answered them by providing encouragement and renewal through the things we learned and from the extended face-to-face time with colleagues, some of whom I had never met in person. The Lord is using your partnership with my Wycliffe ministry to provide ongoing encouragement as we each do our part within his plan of bringing the Bible to the world.</div><div><br /></div><div>Mom seems to be entering a more challenging stage of her journey. Thank you in advance for your continued prayers for grace as she walks through these life changes.</div>Lisahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04785225357899036438noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6907631272228886089.post-90775709239226979012022-08-19T05:34:00.001-04:002022-08-19T05:35:00.067-04:00Oral Bible StorytellingPastor Laban is an oral Bible storyteller in a project in northeastern Nigeria. He visited a village where the people were devout idol worshipers and told them Bible stories in their language. They all accepted Jesus to be their Lord and Savior! <b>Hallelujah!</b><div><br /></div><div>They immediately requested a church to be started for them and began gathering for worship under a tree near their now-abandoned shrine. The community leader donated a piece of land for a building to be built. It has now been erected with a roof, though it's not plastered and is without windows and doors. Yet, they are faithfully gathering for worship and using the building for Sunday church services and other activities. Join me in <b>praising God for the power of his Word</b> in a language and form that the people understood!<div><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiG6joBy9kxn0PempqiZe4UHnDoyN-nrjCaaeU-8be7nhFHSvu3Qxf6P4NmX-1h7LCvXL4TXvFyB-1Dstc8MqiZLxCNDO-SN_Rb6N627-ZTK0fdgPg6W5RGbdL5skpUrxm-wk-YvJaGR1Ybr71YNKup-DzVNfcAwaspfaqMzODLuDvrpTJpNL0Q9aENfA/s492/Picture1.png" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="424" data-original-width="492" height="276" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiG6joBy9kxn0PempqiZe4UHnDoyN-nrjCaaeU-8be7nhFHSvu3Qxf6P4NmX-1h7LCvXL4TXvFyB-1Dstc8MqiZLxCNDO-SN_Rb6N627-ZTK0fdgPg6W5RGbdL5skpUrxm-wk-YvJaGR1Ybr71YNKup-DzVNfcAwaspfaqMzODLuDvrpTJpNL0Q9aENfA/s320/Picture1.png" width="320" /></a><br /><div style="text-align: left;"><i><span style="font-size: x-small;">Story and Photo Source: <a href="https://wycliffe.org/partner/ame" target="_blank">Amy Easterlin</a></span></i></div></div><br />I leave on <b>Monday for a two-week trip to Orlando</b> where I will attend meetings with other Wycliffe USA colleagues. This past month, the Member Finance team of Wycliffe USA has been a part of facilitating economic helps for those who depend on the gifts of churches and individuals. In this time of uncertainty, many colleagues and their financial partners have experienced financial challenges. Through the provision of gracious donors, funds were made available for those who qualified for and requested help. Our team was responsible to process those requests. It’s a privilege to be a part of the background happenings, knowing that <i>our</i> part of Bible translation is to help other Wycliffe personnel continue to focus on <i>their</i> part in Bible translation, rather than on financial concerns.<div><br /></div><div>In my other role, the Stateside Care team began celebrating anniversaries -- years spent with Wycliffe. This month, we’ll send cards for a 1st anniversary, a 50th anniversary, and several in between! We hope to remind these co-workers that what they do is being used by God. Our prayer is that they will be encouraged to continue serving well.</div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div>In just that same way, what <u>you</u> do matters -- your prayers and gifts for my Wycliffe ministry are being used by God to serve others. Thank you for your faithfulness!<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiaPA0obTGeykqi3dSTCsdIEBmUmWST4ULchPnZXWgffpRjYuOpTtNMxRRBzyKEz2GQLISGeT_SBPgBvCK_ACMXiypAQqCNdjc4mnMiJw5twHdlti_EonddS-0M42t_Ic5KXVrVkT81uV-f8JRB_ZxXK5CfKON8EMWk5fivQdXK_QgGPQMhwvKKffxF5Q/s357/Picture1.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="357" data-original-width="346" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiaPA0obTGeykqi3dSTCsdIEBmUmWST4ULchPnZXWgffpRjYuOpTtNMxRRBzyKEz2GQLISGeT_SBPgBvCK_ACMXiypAQqCNdjc4mnMiJw5twHdlti_EonddS-0M42t_Ic5KXVrVkT81uV-f8JRB_ZxXK5CfKON8EMWk5fivQdXK_QgGPQMhwvKKffxF5Q/w194-h200/Picture1.png" width="194" /></a></div></div><div> <br /><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: medium;">Personal Update </span></div><div><br /></div>I’ve enjoyed being in Indianapolis and the opportunities to reconnect with many of you. I look forward to meeting others face-to-face after spending so many hours online together.</div><div><br />I’ve also been able to enjoy immediate and extended family gatherings. A new translation of the Bible starting in Senegal is using ground-breaking translation methods so more people will be able to hear about Jesus. The translation will be oral in both process and outcome. This is the first time a translation will be done orally in Senegal.<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://www.wycliffe.org.uk/stories/%27so-that-people-can-understand-clearly-who-jesus-is%27/" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;" target="_blank"><img border="0" data-original-height="540" data-original-width="496" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjUwNRjqQ0PFjf9SqPmewg-yZBC8ZbGMn2As8om4eWFIAojayNrQ72bT_TC6_gnUW-neymYSVWAXWm0f4DdGblXQS3B-2R8YMDTetCa8wNP_foCQq87L7XboOqJcADDm3rEU4_NkbKGpIGymEE8ufhszbMtHRgfTRfhvKNDNcXeeQbepTNQgq7ufnv95g/s320/Picture1.png" width="294" /></a></div><br /><div>One of the translation team members explains: "First we will go through the passage so the translators understand it and internalise the passage, so they can tell it in a way that is natural in Contemporary Wolof (the local language). Then we will listen to it, check it, and adjust it. We do that over and over until we have an accurate and natural draft. It goes through all the same checking processes that a written translation goes through."</div><div><br /></div>Your prayers and gifts for my Wycliffe ministry impact translation so that others like the Senegalese may understand the Bible and know Jesus. It's why we are on this journey together. You are a part of what God is doing around the world!<div><br /></div><div>So what am I doing now? Well, I was able to help with two online workshops last week. I've been able to pray with and for those in challenging situations. I've helped test some new financial software and helped write explanations of programs yet to come. I've been a part of processing different kinds of budget documents on behalf of other colleagues. My days are not necessarily predictable, but it is such a gift to be able to serve from Indiana. Pray for continued wisdom to learn well and be responsive to the needs of those I serve.<div><br /></div><div>Mom has had three weeks of physical therapy for her gait, and she is beginning to see some progress and increased energy and stability. We are thankful! We're enjoying a little outdoor time now and bought the first flowers that she will be potting soon. May God's blessings be as obvious in your lives, too.<br /></div></div>Lisahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04785225357899036438noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6907631272228886089.post-29465888973453294292022-05-06T05:39:00.000-04:002022-05-06T05:39:34.632-04:00How Will They Know?Praise God, there have been amazing strides forward in Bible translation in recent years. From the use of <a href="https://youtu.be/koWhhdLSBJI" target="_blank">satellite internet</a> access to <a href="https://www.faithcomesbyhearing.com/what-we-do/oral-bible-translation" target="_blank">Oral Bible Translation</a>, translation into minority languages is happening with increasing speed and effectiveness. Yet there are still more than 1800 language groups today for which there is not even a translation project started. How will they know?<div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEigqyQoSE18BhF_D_H7gkSVVehbjIgcWDd2CMJnuap8nbnl2ScNqQK4v39Ct_L86wx2UoRKpAJpCjrRICM0QFoeoK6ZTMCU6wh2gyhLrBlI6d1m_oceoM76lnNWOe3Liujen4kPcRfUOIwj4CWKiBQlL4ZV7bBvHv12G_h2XX5NTVZ87QR-VAJgo7Qs2w/s514/Picture1.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><br /><img border="0" data-original-height="514" data-original-width="459" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEigqyQoSE18BhF_D_H7gkSVVehbjIgcWDd2CMJnuap8nbnl2ScNqQK4v39Ct_L86wx2UoRKpAJpCjrRICM0QFoeoK6ZTMCU6wh2gyhLrBlI6d1m_oceoM76lnNWOe3Liujen4kPcRfUOIwj4CWKiBQlL4ZV7bBvHv12G_h2XX5NTVZ87QR-VAJgo7Qs2w/w286-h320/Picture1.png" width="286" /></a></div><div><br /></div>This man belongs to the Hani people who live in southern China near the border with Viet Nam. More than 750,000 people belong to the Hani language community, which is considered a minority in the vast nation of China. The Chinese government has recognized that the Hani have the lowest quality of life of all the official Chinese minority groups. I get to use a little bit a techy-ness to host, too, which is fun for me.</div><div><br /></div><div>I’ve also been able to get into more predictable routines for some basic things in life, including exercise. However, there is good news. Deaf Bible translators from DOOR have completed a 110-narrative Chronological Study Bible in Nigerian Sign Language.<div><br /></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjbvE2aGyCYTRsE5CNfE1Xk_8RPROKGAIhowq6akYpLl5RlGa9IfKIjJxZ57jE4AkQVTjMg08nwHsX5QQaLbvhxWINCNBIP_RGaLElkl7mKxQw5SDFhz62a6A3HQtmttGNde9bsY_Jw4oMY_RKzogyoPhS3nHGdg-PnZRf_k-R3UfjPs06iNWggxxanoQ/s389/Picture1.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="389" data-original-width="306" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjbvE2aGyCYTRsE5CNfE1Xk_8RPROKGAIhowq6akYpLl5RlGa9IfKIjJxZ57jE4AkQVTjMg08nwHsX5QQaLbvhxWINCNBIP_RGaLElkl7mKxQw5SDFhz62a6A3HQtmttGNde9bsY_Jw4oMY_RKzogyoPhS3nHGdg-PnZRf_k-R3UfjPs06iNWggxxanoQ/s320/Picture1.png" width="252" /></a></div>Deaf people best understand the Gospel when a Deaf believer shares it with them in the local sign language. Furthermore, Deaf people prefer to learn new information in a chronological order. They like to “see the big picture” from beginning to end.</div><div><br /></div><div>That’s why our Deaf staff chose Chronological Bible Translation (CBT) as the most culturally appropriate way to communicate God’s Word with Deaf communities. We’ve found CBT to be a very clear, accurate, and natural way to teach unreached Deaf people about God. Because Deaf people can easily understand God’s Word when it is in narrative form, they are able to go and teach it to others.</div><div><br /></div><div>Each Chronological Bible Translation consists of 110 biblical narratives from Genesis to Revelation. Each narrative is accompanied by an introduction to give context, and a section giving more information about the passage.</div><div><br /></div><div>Blessing, a Deaf Nigerian woman, was involved in the community testing of Acts 16:16-40, the story of the stoning of Stephen. I'm learning a lot and connecting with a number of folks in the organization who are new to me. I am not only getting to know the teams I have joined, but my work now interfaces with entirely different teams than I did previously. It's been great to begin to get to know a whole new group of colleagues. With the Member Finance team, I am learning there are intricate processes in place to keep things running smoothly. With the Stateside Care team, I am beginning to connect with many who have been with Wycliffe for decades... and we get to help care for them and encourage them to continue serving well.<div><br /></div><div>In the previous paradigm, I had longer contact to help a smaller group of Wycliffe people. In the past six weeks, I've touched base with 14 households about budgets and introduced the services of the Stateside Care team to 73 households. Each of these co-workers impact Bible translation and your partnership through your gifts and prayers for my Wycliffe ministry impacts them. Thank you! I am amazed at and grateful for God's ways of using each of us where he has placed us to accomplish his purposes. This video expresses the gratitude of Wycliffe for your part!<br /><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><iframe allowfullscreen="" class="BLOG_video_class" height="266" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/4isSfqLpSCE" width="320" youtube-src-id="4isSfqLpSCE"></iframe></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://youtu.be/3YY6Elf91rw">Celebrating 80 Years of Bible Translation!</a></div></div>Lisahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04785225357899036438noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6907631272228886089.post-52433074828185435622022-02-04T05:42:00.000-05:002022-02-04T05:42:34.598-05:00New RolesThank you for your prayers for Equip #53. The two weeks went very smoothly. It was an honor to be a part of the "Crew" to serve our new colleagues. The Lord is already using them to share about Bible translation. Our prayer is that God will provide teams of prayer and financial partners for their Wycliffe ministries so they may go on soon to their service assignments.<br /><br />This past Monday, I began training as a "member financial liaison." I'll be in that role half of the time, guiding new members through financial policies and requirements, helping them to understand and initiate their financial relationship with Wycliffe USA in a manner that is competent and timely. There have been open positions on this team for months. It is a highly detailed role, so it will be a good brain stretch. Last week I was a "teacher" -- now I am a student who has much to learn! I'm encouraged that most of my first clients came through virtual Equips, so we have worked together already.<br /><br />The other half of my time will be as a "stateside care facilitator," helping care for and celebrate U.S.-based staff and assisting in connecting them with the Wycliffe people and services available. The goal is that U.S.-based staff feel valued and encouraged to continue serving well. I've had the opportunity to meet and serve a number of these colleagues already as they came through Wycliffe Stateside Connection programs in Orlando.<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhFTDeFqXPzfxkkOGNXJtUKohtYmWWBJ4klsr6nzALJSqiXuGBvro81dwExaBfBcdWqGxBmHcFK1yYtgjvy-aPvvCQgiwQRw0g-7LK3hyO4yZkku0NUx8anMr_kpLyjUrDIRYKD8BwPTnOAaIekXH0tZnPzHdHvPTcBwHjn4WUZzEez3u5Yy9TSc1O-yA=s768" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="768" data-original-width="768" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhFTDeFqXPzfxkkOGNXJtUKohtYmWWBJ4klsr6nzALJSqiXuGBvro81dwExaBfBcdWqGxBmHcFK1yYtgjvy-aPvvCQgiwQRw0g-7LK3hyO4yZkku0NUx8anMr_kpLyjUrDIRYKD8BwPTnOAaIekXH0tZnPzHdHvPTcBwHjn4WUZzEez3u5Yy9TSc1O-yA=w320-h320" width="320" /></a></div><div>This year, Wycliffe Bible Translators celebrates 80 years of serving minority communities around the world through Bible translation. More importantly, our involvement in Bible translation imitates the way that God has worked through Scripture and history. The Bible paints a picture of a God who reaches out to people to meet them where they are. He does not expect people to climb up to him, but he comes down to us and communicates with us in a way that we can understand. It can be hard to hear God’s voice in the midst of it all. Why not take some time to listen to him each day this week? If you’re struggling, it might be helpful to remember that <i>shema</i>, the Hebrew word for “hear” or “listen” can also mean “pay attention” or “obey.”<div><br /></div><div><i>Pray that the Lord will help us to pay obedient attention to him over this Christmas season which is so full of distractions.</i></div><div><br /></div><div>One of the easiest ways to hear God speak is to listen to an audio Bible. <i>Shema</i> closely: let the words reach not just your ears but your heart and mind too – listen with attention and obedience to God. The big challenge now is to do the same thing every time we hear or read a verse or passage from the Bible this Christmas – especially when those passages are very familiar.</div><div><br /></div><div><i>Praise God that he communicates in ways we can understand – above all, through coming to live as a human – God with us.</i></div><div><br /></div><div>In lots of places around the world, people prefer to learn and share information orally. In these contexts, it is often effective to share the good news of Jesus through Bible storytelling and Bible-based songs. And when people can hear it in the language they understand best and in a way that makes sense to them, it is so much easier to pay attention and obey.</div><div><br /></div><div><i>Praise God for people who want to help others understand the Bible.</i></div><div><br /></div><div><i><span style="font-size: x-small;">Read more at <a href="https://www.wycliffe.org.uk/stories/have-you-not-heard/" target="_blank">wycliffe.org.uk/stories/have-you-not-heard/</a></span></i></div><div><i><span style="font-size: x-small;"><br /></span></i></div><h3 style="text-align: left;">Personal Update</h3><div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">Thank you for your prayers for a smooth move to Indiana. The Lord provided the right people at the right time to help sort, pack, load, and unload. My trip north was encouraging. I am grateful for friends over the years and the miles. Then I was able to celebrate Thanksgiving with family. The last time I had done that was immediately before the move to Florida in 2010.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">The time-sensitive essentials are now in place and I’ve begun to settle in… not only into my childhood home, but also into a more permanent life back in Indiana. It feels very different than all the wonderful visits here I’ve had over the past 11 years.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">For the next few months, I’ll be in transition in my role with Wycliffe, too. We’re preparing for another virtual Equip (orientation) in January. I’m still helping with logistics for upcoming programs. And, I’m part of a group who is defining a new role/team to facilitate care for approximately 800 Wycliffe staff who live in the U.S. but are outside the Orlando Headquarters area. To me, it is providential that I am now one of those folks!</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div>For an additional personal update, <i><a href="https://groups.google.com/u/1/g/lisas-lines/c/novBexvY1LQ" target="_blank">visit my google group</a>. </i></div>Lisahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04785225357899036438noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6907631272228886089.post-33673662657554312472021-11-12T06:14:00.001-05:002021-11-12T06:14:51.785-05:00Last Florida UpdateThank you for your prayers for Wycliffe Stateside Connection (WSC). Things went very well and it was wonderful to be face-to-face with colleagues. As they heard about my coming transition, they cared as much for me as we worked to care for them! It was truly an encouraging week.<div><br /></div><div>Once WSC finished, the packing and sorting process began. All has gone well and I am so grateful for all the help I have had! The moving "pods" will be delivered this morning. We're still planning on a <b>November 19 closing</b>.</div><div><br /></div><div>In an unexpected turn of events, I have been approached about helping develop a <b>new role</b> with Wycliffe that would come alongside those in the US -- most of whom are not in Orlando -- more fully. It's exciting to think about that! Fulfilling the role from Indiana rather than Orlando would be perfect, too! More details as that begins to take shape.</div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjOXds8vA5jVcErZ_n3uP_DSot1_ZhpQlhty4KoEDTCKCDBJaYDRRRQ8NnHLDQg7ZSXfq1tjHCPRJGhKETqc0AxOdjNAKN6u0MrJuA27rO3EV_me-5C4Xn9CyadPrSyM0EP5x1QAaUgzhXk/s487/2021-10-22.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="374" data-original-width="487" height="246" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjOXds8vA5jVcErZ_n3uP_DSot1_ZhpQlhty4KoEDTCKCDBJaYDRRRQ8NnHLDQg7ZSXfq1tjHCPRJGhKETqc0AxOdjNAKN6u0MrJuA27rO3EV_me-5C4Xn9CyadPrSyM0EP5x1QAaUgzhXk/s320/2021-10-22.png" width="320" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: x-small;">headed north</span></div><div><br />Would you <b>pray with me</b> for these things?<br /><ul style="text-align: left;"><li>Good closure -- the hard good-byes</li><li>Sale of the rest of my furniture and household goods</li><li>Smooth closing for the house</li><li>Safe travels north, Nov 19-24</li></ul>Thank you again for your many prayers and encouragements.
